Penticton anchors the South Okanagan's most concentrated wine regions. The Naramata Bench north of the city holds more than 40 wineries in a 13-kilometre stretch — the highest winery density in Canada — while the Skaha Bench to the south hosts smaller, boutique estates producing some of BC's most acclaimed reds.
The Naramata Bench is a hillside vineyard belt between Okanagan Lake and the KVR (Kettle Valley Rail) Trail, running from north Penticton to Naramata village. It's famous for aromatic whites, Pinot Noir, and full-bodied reds thanks to south- and southwest-facing slopes, well-drained soils, and one of the warmest microclimates in Canada.
Notable Naramata Bench wineries include Poplar Grove (Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and their flagship Legacy blend), Van Westen Vineyards (small-lot Bordeaux varieties named after fruit — Voluptuous, Vino Grande), Blasted Church (whimsically labelled aromatic whites and Rhône-style reds), Terravista Vineyards (Spanish-varietal specialists — Albariño, Verdejo), Nichol Vineyard (BC's first commercial Syrah, planted 1989), Elephant Island Winery (fruit wines from tree fruits — a Naramata original), Bench 1775, Deep Roots, Lang Vineyards, and Ruby Blues.
The Skaha Bench, on the west side of Skaha Lake south of Penticton, produces some of BC's most concentrated reds. Painted Rock Estate Winery is the standout — award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay from steep south-facing slopes. Other notable estates include Kraze Legz, Pentâge, and Blue Mountain (Okanagan Falls, technically, but often grouped with Skaha).
Penticton is the epicentre of the Okanagan's biggest wine event — the Half Corked Marathon (usually late May) — plus the fall Naramata Bench Wine Festival. The Naramata Bench is best explored by cycling the KVR Trail — the flat, wide, former rail bed passes near dozens of wineries and offers unmatched lake views. Several outfitters rent bikes in Penticton and Naramata village. Alternatively, book a guided tour or hire a designated driver; the Bench road is narrow and winding.
Penticton and the Naramata Bench are known for Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and increasingly Grüner Veltliner and Spanish varieties (Albariño, Tempranillo). The Skaha Bench and further-south sub-regions produce BC's warmest-climate reds.
Most Bench wineries are open daily May–October, closed or by-appointment November–April. Reservations recommended at premium estates.
